Evolving ASDF: More Cooperation, Less Coordination

Keywords: Common Lisp, build infrastructure, interaction design, code evolution, dynamic code update.

Abstract: We present ASDF2, the current state of the art in CL build systems. From a technical standpoint, ASDF2 improves upon ASDF by integrating previous common extensions, making configuration easy, and fixing bugs. However the overriding concern driving these changes was social rather than technical: ASDF plays a central role in the CL community and we wanted to reduce the coordination costs that it imposed upon CL programmers. We outline ASDF’s history and architecture, explain the link between the social issues we faced and the software features we added, and explore the technical challenges involved and lessons learned, notably involving in-place code upgrade of ASDF itself, backward compatibility, portability, testing and other coding best practices.

SHOPPER: Interpreter for a High-level Web Services Language

Keywords: web service composition, interpreters, OWL, LTML, Lisp

Abstract: We have been working on the POIROT project as part of DARPA’s Integrated Learning program. POIROT is a large research program that aims to integrate multiple systems for learning workflows whose building blocks are semantic web services. These semantic web services are marked up in the Learnable Task Modeling Language (LTML). LTML (McDermott et al. 2008) is a radically composable web service markup and planning language with an s-expression syntax that extends both OWL-S (Martin et al. 2004), the W3C language for semantic web service markup, and the standard planning language PDDL (PDDL Resources). We have developed SHOPPER, a Common Lisp-based interpreter for the LTML language that is able to interpret unified LTML workflows, building and maintaining a complex state model based on information gathered from execution of semantic web services through the OWL Virtual Machine (OVM).

Model-based Intrusion Assessment in Common Lisp

Keywords: computer security, intrusion detection, report fusion, IDS fusion, IDS correlation, lisp

Abstract: We describe the Scyllarus system, which performs Intrusion Detection System (IDS) fusion, using Bayes nets and qualitative probability.1 IDSes are systems that sense intrusions in computer networks and hosts. IDS fusion is the problem of fusing reports from multiple IDSes scattered around a computer network we wish to defend, into a coherent overall picture of network status. Scyllarus treats the problem of IDS fusion as an abduction problem, formalized using Bayes nets and Knowledge-based Model Construction (KBMC). Because of the coarseness of the data available, Scyllarus uses a qualitative framework, based on System- Z+. Qualitative Bayes nets allow Scyllarus to exploit the strengths of probabilistic reasoning, without excessive knowledge acquisition and without committing to a misleading level of accuracy in its conclusions. The Scyllarus system gave excellent results on a mediumsized corporate network, where it was in continuous use for approximately four years, and was validated in a DARPA-funded assessment. Under US Federal government funding, we are now working to adapt Scyllarus to analyze detection reports from sensors monitoring very high speed (10 - 100 Gb/second) networks in a project called "SMITE"
