E4D2: Etiquette for Directives

This program utilized SIFT’s etiquette model and existing cultural knowledge to create a test bed for evaluating the effects of etiquette and culture on task performance.

In 2008, SIFT completed E4D2, a Phase II Air Force-sponsored SBIR, entitled “Culture, Etiquette and Performance” (contract numbers: FA8650-05-M-6616 and FA8650-06-C-6635, POC: Ms. Kellie Turner-- (937) 255-9395). E4D2 utilized SIFT’s etiquette model and existing cultural knowledge to create a test bed for evaluating the effects of etiquette and culture on task performance. As a result of this work, we have empirical evidence supporting our theory that politeness, even when conveyed by machines, affects objective human performance metrics such as compliance and reaction time.
