NAPP: Nighttime Alleviation Play & Practice

Background:

Sleeping less than 7 hours per night is associated with impaired immune function, increased pain, impaired performance, increased errors, and greater risk of accidents. Lack of sleep is a high-priority problem that is particularly pronounced in the military. Sleep problems can compromise operational effectiveness and make it difficult for service members to resume their lives after returning home from a deployment. However,  sleep problems are often caused by behaviors related to poor sleep hygiene, e.g. caffeine or alcohol consumption.

SIFT Approach:

NAPP is a 3D role-playing adventure gaming app that teaches about different sleep hygiene behaviors using an engaging storyline. NAPP integrates real-world sensor data from the phone and provides individualized feedback as part of the game. NAPP is based on an experimentally validated behavior change model called the Transtheoretical Model of Change, which identifies individual readiness in order to provide stage-matched, tailored interventions to move the player along a five different stages of change.

Benefits:

  • NAPP is a  cost-effective, completely unobtrusive solution, not requiring additional wearables or devices, but capitalizes on data from existing apps/devices/wearables
  • NAPP motivates change, increases awareness and addresses behaviors even if the player is not ready to change
  • NAPP builds on evidence-based solutions developed through rigorous research and suited to address multiple behaviors impacting overall well-being
  • Recognizes small changes, encourages and uses stage-matched communication strategies known to bypass social stigma and social desirability
